We are in the midst of porn's award nomination season, and while all the critics get their last minute screenings and voting done, this is an excellent time for you to get caught up on what is most definitely the year's best American porn.

There are fifteen nominees in the category of Best Actress for this year's AVN Awards show. These five are the ones that I have enjoyed most of what I have seen. Carter Cruise in Wicked Comix's "Supergirl XXX: An Axel Braun Parody"

Cruise's performance as Krypton's blonde beauty is remarkable. She projects the all-American goodness of the comic book character excellently, and she does an incredibly hot and AVN Award nominated scene with Charles Dera, who plays the role of Batman. (That's her enjoying his cock at the top of this piece.) Cruise finds herself manipulated by Derrick Pierce in the role of Lex Luthor - his performance received a Best Supporting Actor nod - and her anger at being vulnerable to this villain and actually loving him is palpable. She is violated, enraged, and projecting emotions that a lot of women know way too well. Cruise goes after every orgasm in this with a vengeance. Veruca James in Kink's "Deception: A XXX Thriller"

This excellent Kink feature is directed by AVN Web Director of the Year nominee The Pope, and the emotionally resonant feature only stars James and her fellow hot switch Cherry Torn. You can pick up the DVD here or you can watch the whole feature over at Kink's Hogtied website. James and Torn play friends who rent a creepy cabin in the woods from a very creepy Pope. James is wonderful in this, showing her crush on friend Torn and projecting solid slasher movie-style fear of the all of the fake non-consensual doings that happen to her holes. This is a very hardcore and very unforgettable performance.

Cassidy Klein in Girlsway's "Little Red: A Lesbian Fairy Tale"

Klein plays the lead role of an emotionally and psychologically damaged orphan gorgeously in this fairy tale feature directed by AVN Director of the Year nominees Alan E. and Bree Mills. The production itself is up for Best Feature, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, and Klein does an outstanding job here. Klein is creepy, fierce, and simultaneously vulnerable and voracious. The movie itself is delightfully surreal and very well cast. Klein's performance is inspired and she just gives a whole lot of herself in this. You get to see her sweat, grunt, and get off a ton in this, and she does the iconic red cloak complete justice. Here's the review I did of this feature earlier this month. I love this kinky, filthy movie so very much.

Penny Pax in New Sensations' "The Submission of Emma Marx--Exposed"

Pax has widely received lots of love and awards for playing the title role in this now-finished BDSM series including two AVN Best Actress awards for her work in this role. Director Jacky St. James did a phenomenal job of creating the character of a woman pursuing her erotic dreams and her true love, and Pax brings this person to life before us beautifully. Her master/husband Richie Calhoun is up for Best Actor for his work opposite her, and it is truly one of the most emotionally moving adult features I have ever watched in my considerable time watching these movies professionally. Here's my review of this title that I wrote spring. Don't skip this one, people. This is a series you need, need, NEED to see/own.

Dana Vespoli in Sweetheart Video/Mile High Media's "Lefty"

AVN Hall of Famer Vespoli wrote, directed, and stars in the title role in this feature about a troubled lesbian MMA fighter. It is not the typical type of role that a porn leading lady takes on and that alone makes me love it. Vespoli's boxer experiences great personal tragedies and transcends them with fire. Buttwoman Alexis Texas plays Vespoli's porn star girlfriend and AVN Best Supporting Actress nominee Bree Daniels is an investigative journalist wanting to know what makes fighter Vespoli tick. Vespoli makes Lefty's anger and fears come right to the surface. The sex here is pretty wonderful and Vespoli is one tough, beautiful chick who you will find yourself pulling for and masturbating to.
