Brooklyn Lee makes getting eternally fucked a good thing.

Shot in Malibu, Budapest, and Berlin, “Voracious” stars Brooklyn Lee as a vampiress who has problems with self control; she almost makes a vampire out of civilian Manuel Ferrara, and then wishes she could be turned mortal again just to be with him. The pair must reckon with debauched priest Steve Holmes, Vampire Clan leader Omar Galanti, and henchman Rocco Siffredi. The power-hungry Lea Lexis leads the Euro contingent of porn vampiresses, Blood Slaves, and doomed prostitutes.

Stagliano has made a sweeping series at a time when that’s just about impossible to do. Each episode (nine are currently online) ranges from 30 minutes to just over an hour, and provides a satisfying amount of story that then demands a transition to a single, sustained porn scene that takes up 90 percent of the episode. The format has a Golden Age, ensemble-driven, budget-agnostic feel that makes you think cast and crew had all the time in the world—of course they didn’t—to get the best single-mindedly dirty people together.

Stagliano left a similarly big footprint in the last decade with his two “Fashionistas” movies, which proved transformative both to porn and to the careers and sensibilities of stars Belladonna and Sasha Grey. Brooklyn Lee herself seems poised for porn greatness with her “Voracious” performance, alternately poignant, wild, and unstoppable. Like those two other complex and smart brunettes, Lee has that quality of being put through the wringer but maintaining sexual power. One of my favorite images from the first episode finds Lexis pinning down a raving, bloodlusty Lee. The pair has just fucked Ferrara and Lee wants to finish him off, vampire-style. But it is too soon; so one fuck-slick vampiress holds the other down while Ferrara makes his escape.

It is, of course, refreshing to see porn shot somewhere other than the San Fernando Valley, but “Voracious” makes extra effort to introduce us to its night-time locations: the Malibu coast looks beautiful in the twilight, and Lee’s forced blowjob of Father Steve is made more impressive in the glow from Berlin’s Victory Tower. The gals look that much more vampiric when they disembark by starlight on the Danube, and prostitutes being savagely fucked in a Budapest park is a charming part of any travelogue.

I recently watched the classic “Opening of Misty Beethoven” and was impressed with both its sweep, its theatricality, and its 70s banter. “Voracious” is not a throwback to this type of movie because nobody’s there for the dialogue. But Stagliano’s film does mirror iconic movies like “Misty Beethoven” in the sense a viewer gets that everyone on camera is at the prime of his/her powers and is among real pros.

In “Slutty & Sluttier 7″, gammy beauty Lucy Belle joins Ferrara and a friend at a coffee shop for some public pussy teasing and exhibitionism before being spirited away to a private residence and treated to some world-class ass fucking. Later, pale and raven-tressed Milka experiments with a lollipop in a yeast-defying act of rebellion on a public train. Then Jasmine Black takes on two men at once before the copper coiffed Valentina Blue gets her turn to ski slalom; all are awarded the appropriately for their exertions. But despite watching this several times, we stillc an’t tell who’s “sluttier” and who is merely “slutty”. Maybe they use those terms differently Over There.

Whether you want to donate to the Evil Angel legal defense fund or spend 10 glorious, disturbing, jaw-dropping, delightful, and carnivorous hours with the likes of Belladonna, Sasha Grey, Sandra Romain, Eva Angelina, and Tricia Devereaux (or, I imagine, both), you will love “Defend Our Porn.”

In April, 2008 Evil Angel founder and director John Stagliano was indicted on obscenity charges in the type of case that has become familiar to First Amendment watchers who are also porn consumers: several Evil Angel titles, as well as trailers for a Belladonna movie, were obtained in a United States county in which “community standards” seemed rigid enough to bring charges of obscenity. In 2009 the case will likely go to trial.

Notwithstanding (of course) that the titles in question arrived by request of someone over 18 years of age, as they did in dozens of more lenient counties throughout the United States, Stagliano now faces an expensive legal battle in a season that has also seen court cases against the more extreme JM Productions and Max Hardcore.

“Defend Our Porn” is a compilation DVD of scenes from every current Evil Angel director, as well as alumnus Jules Jordan. And it also features a brand new scene with Tricia Devereaux, Stagliano’s wife. Proceeds from the 16-scene, 10-hour, 3-DVD box will defray Stagliano’s legal bills.

What is remarkable about the Evil Angel case is that, though the company is undeniably hardcore, it is less so, and far more arty, than the year’s other porn defendants. A case against Evil Angel bodes ill for more mainstream adult companies.

So, as both a compilation “Best of” DVD and as a statement of rights, “Defend Our Porn” starts with a bang in a scene with the irrepressible Nacho Vidal from “Fashionistas Safado: Berlin”. No male performer can hold a candle to Nacho in the talking dirty department. “Why did you come here with underwear?” is one of his gems. Melissa Lauren handles this onslaught with fear and aplomb.

Then veteran director John Leslie presents a scene with Naomi. This scene is reminiscent of mid-90′s porn and Naomi is definitely the type of model who embodies that vibe and is beloved of fans of that era. Naomi, I am required to say, has an amazing ass. With it she coaxes a load from James Deen that I expect he is still proud of.

In an outdoor scene from Rocco Siffredi’s “Rocco’s Way to Love,” (I’m hoping this is a translation), Kelly Stafford performs in a headlight-lit gangbang. It reminded me a little of “Rebel Without A Cause” if that movie had ended the way I wanted it to.

“Do you want to see the throat fucking doctor?” a game Sasha Grey is asked in “Face Fucking Inc.,” a departure from the grainier previous scenes. What sets this scene apart is the Porn Valley-ness of the proceedings, clothing, and lighting, but Sasha Grey lends the scene star power and makes it memorable. Really, porn is about the people.

Nacho then returns with Avy Scott in a scene that would have been creepy even without the monkey.

Disc Two includes part of Belladonna’s return to guys, “Cock Happy,” as well as an Eva Angelina gangbang in which the 2008 AVN Best Actress is used most jubilantly. Mia Rose appears in a scene with Manuel Ferrara that establishes her as the anti-Teagan. Unlike the harder-looking or more Euro-style Evil Angel performers, the diminutive Rose is all Porn Valley, but uncharacteristically self-aware.

Disc Three includes a performance by The Unsinkable Sandra Romain (on a spotless beige rug). Belladonna returns deliciously in a scene from Jules Jordan’s “Ass Worship,” and, in the set’s one original outing, Tricia Devereaux comes out of retirement for a clothespinny scene with Derrick Pierce.

“I told you I was in love with my husband,” she says.

“That’s not what we’re talking about, is it?” he says.

Of all the great, blitzkrieg excerpts in “Defend Our Porn”, this final segment takes its time and benefits from it. Devereaux was nervous about this scene. She’s older, she’s put on some weight-all the things that make women uncomfortable, even in (or especially in) porn. But she looks great, of course, and, much as it is a signature pleasure watching all the teenagers flying around on the other discs, to watch grown women Romain, Belladonna, and Devereaux get (and give) the business in Disc Three is a real payoff.

“Defend Our Porn” is a fundraising effort but it is also a loadblowingly good value for all the diverse, quality porn it provides.

This movie reminds us that for every high-gloss example of empowerment through porn, there are fifty times as many stories that confirm porn’s detractors’ worst suspicions.

With a budget of $375,000 (reportedly), “Upload” is one of the most expensive porn movies ever made. It had better be great, and it is.

Borrowing a little from bleak science fiction like “The Matrix”, “Minority Report”, “Strange Days”, “eXistenZ”, David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” (with Hillary Scott as Major Tom) and, for some reason, selections from the score of “American Beauty”, “Upload” integrates very dirty sex plausibly into a compelling, challenging script by Alvin Edwards and director Eli Cross.

Most dramatic porn requires a suspension of disbelief. We watch performers play-acting serious dialogue like they are trying on strange clothes in an 80′s montage sequence. And why should we expect more? When they’re having sex on film, is that the way real people do it?

But “Upload” clicks each time, and just when you start worrying that a performer has bitten off more than he can chew, when you think, “Uh oh – ,” the movie takes a corner.

Eva Angelina plays Cassandra Cray, an agent with the top secret, licensed to kill Digital Security Agency of the Homeland Security Department.

“I don’t have to make you an enemy combatant to make you disappear from the planet,” she says during an interrogation.

Angelina is on the trail of Tesla (Hillary Scott), a gal who records her sexual escapades onto a chip, or SIM, that allows others to experience what she does. She is, in the world of the movie, a SIMwhore, and that’s illegal enough to attract Cassandra’s attention.

But Scott isn’t carrying any SIM. The data encoded on the chip Scott is protecting is a little more dynamic, and presents a threat to national security.

Other people’s sex on a chip planted into one’s own neck provides ample opportunity for relevant sex scenes. We watch what turns on Hillary and Eva as well as what passes through the minds of male leads Derrick Pierce and Bryn Pryor.

The movie is told in flashbacks. Angelina is brought before an Internal Affairs psychiatrist (Pryor) and she recounts the sordid tale of how she tracked down Tesla, what Tesla’s interrogation revealed, and why love, when reduced to ones and zeros, might be worthwhile if there are enough of them to make the relationship interesting.

So the story is ambitious. “Upload” is not the first porn movie to shoulder a weighty script, but it does it more effectively than any porn movie I’ve seen. It trusts the audience to follow it along, doesn’t overexplain, and has the admirable quality of joining scenes toward the middle of the action and leaving them before it’s obvious they’re through.

One example comes early in the movie. Angelina explains to Pryor how she first became aware of a new wrinkle in the local SIM-trafficking market. We follow her as she gets promoted past disgruntled wannabes in line at a club. She meets underworld types Evan Stone and Sandra Romain. Here warning bells rang. Why was Stone wearing sunglasses in the club? Was he a Terminator? No matter. As Angelina explained to her interrogator, she got her information not from an exchange of money, but -

- the scene shifts to the three of them fucking the shit out of each other, the demonic Sandra Romain slapping Angelina’s pussy and face in rapid succession as Stone fucks the good agent. Clearly Angelina works in unorthodox ways.

But, she points out, in “Upload”‘s filth-positive context, “I wasn’t molested by my father, my Uncle Ronnie didn’t touch me…wanna hear how my Dracula doll tied up and raped my Barbies when I was five?” Sometimes people feel dirty for no reason at all.

Eva Angelina is fantastic. “Upload” takes two discs to unravel and she is in almost every scene. Her character sometimes takes things lightly, sometimes hates herself, sometimes is inappropriate. In other words, she’s in a porn movie but she has a character.

“I think you fantasize about being that agent that was taken captive,” Pryor declares, after Angelina paints a vivid (but not Vivid) picture of the torture of tasty torturebait Julie Night by Adrianna Nicole and Alex Sanders, who growls over a dildo he is about to shove up Night’s ass:

“Get it wet or I’m gonna stick it in you dry.”

Angelina and partner Pierce become targets when they get too close to the identity of Gagarin, the man poised to take over the world’s digital grid and, knocked out, Pierce has his own fantasy about being a 30′s private eye, complete with black and white interludes with juicy femme fatale Kylie Ireland and willing secretary Delilah Strong.

“Upload” has planty of scenes that might not please timid couples. There is fisting, pissing, lots of anal, lots of choking, torture, rape, and running around topless while drinking. There is even an orgy scene in hell which, compared with the numbing effect of some of the other scenes, didn’t make hell look that bad.

Standout scenes include the three-way with Stone, Romain, and Angelina, a glorious gang bang with Scott and five guys, including Brian Surewood in one of his final performances for awhile, and a dusty desert menage a trois featuring the objects of Angelina’s (and my own) fantasy: Adrianna Nicole, Lorelei Lee, and Madison Young.

“Upload” comes in a four-disc set with lots of extra features, most of which I didn’t watch. A 12-minute sock puppet interpretation of the film, Laundry Load, is included on disc four and is a goofy but very faithful primer on the movie.

The people who make porn that seeks to be something more than Just Porn have the odds stacked against them. No one wants to believe it can be done, not because it can’t, but because it often isn’t. Even the unfortunate public relations department of producer Sex Z Pictures can’t fathom having released a good porn movie. Here’s the headline of a recent press release:

“Upload” tries, and it succeeds. This is the type of movie performers like Angelina and Pierce, who have together been in hundreds of scenes, can be very proud of. It is certainly the best porn movie I’ve ever seen, and I usually can’t stand the stuff.
