Xena Wasn't Openly Gay?
Sure, the Xena reboot wasn't going to have Lucy Lawless involved in any way, shape, or form, but still a Xena: Warrior Princess reboot with an openly gay lead was still a pretty good idea. Wait, Xena wasn't openly gay before? Are you sure? Did you watch the show?
Well, it's sad, but true that reboot has gone the way of the dodo, for now anyway. One of the writers behind the reboot left the show back in 2016 over what he stated as "creative differences", but hinted it was because there was some issue with have Xena be openly gay or as he put it:
“There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s.”
The president of NBC Jennifer Salke took a different tone when discussing Xena being put on the shelf for awhile:
“Nothing is happening on that right now. We looked at some material; we decided at that point that it didn’t warrant the reboot,” Salke tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I’d never say never on that one because it’s such a beloved title, but the current incarnation of it is dead.”
Honestly, I don't know what to think. I mean, if they were only hinting that Xena was gay back in the old show, they were laying it on pretty thick. I got it. I think most people got it. But I guess there some people who weren't paying that much attention or something. Still, not sure how anyone could miss it.
Even though we've all got reboot and remake fatigue, I was kind of excited about a Xena reboot. Well, I guess we should never say never.
