How Could Medical Marijuana Help Your Sex Life?

Don Davidson, MD, shown above, the leading medical director of a cannabis clinic with two offices open in the Los Angeles area, is now taking appointments to perform medical marijuana evaluations for guests at private social events in the L.A. area. I wanted to ask Dr. D. what the positive medical effects of medical marijuana could be for the lucky residents of those states where consuming it is legal. Here is what the man had to say:

"The effect of medical cannabis on men’s sexual health has conflicting reports coming in from the literature vs. anecdotal reports from patients. So what is the takeaway point for the consumer, as there are always risks and benefits from using any substance?"

null

"What do we often hear from patients? That medical marijuana has helped men perform longer, with stronger erections and more pleasure. We often hear a similar story from women that sex while using medical marijuana is more pleasurable."

null

"What do we see in the research? That medical marijuana use on a daily basis reduces testosterone production, which is of course an important steroid in the sex drive."

null

"How can we reconcile these differences? The research studies showing a decrease in testosterone production dosed subjects daily with a large amount of cannabis. Occasional marijuana use, will likely have not have a noticeable effect on testosterone production as all research does show a recovery of testosterone production when cannabis was no longer administered to subjects."

"What are the takeaway points for those considering medical marijuana to improve sexual function?

Occasional use of marijuana is unlikely to lead to harmful effects on sex drive and may relieve anxiety which inhibits performance for both men and women as well as increasing sexual pleasure. With that in mind, medical marijuana seems to be a reasonable and safe substance to use in moderation to help people have more enjoyable sex lives.

Additionally new topical oils containing THC meant to be applied to the female genitals have been studied and have been found to increase the female's physiological response to sexual contact."
