More Than a Great Booty: An Interview with Big Butt Queen Katja Kassin

I have been watching Katja Kassin like a lot of you all have for years. Her body is fucking stunning—always has been. I love how she has always been about using her career to better herself and her life. She is headed for her master's degree and I know that she can get that and anything else that she wants out of life. 

You are indisputably a big booty porn queen. What do you think that that ass has brought you in your career and in your life?

"My biggest asset is still my determination. If I didn't have this skill I would have never been able to capitalize on other more superficial characteristics. What makes me unique as a porn performer is that I have always embraced being a porn performer as a business. I always gave my best in my scenes but I also saved my money. Having a budget has been the foundation of my success and that has brought the most value to my career and my life."

How have you found that American sexuality is different than what you experienced in your native Germany?

"People like to compare and contrast. We tend to focus on how we are different and often forget what makes us similar. I cannot speak for all Germans or all Americans. Such a generalization would not do each individual story justice. I am an immigrant and I understand that it is fascinating for people to hear my perspective on issues because I have personally lived though changes that involved moving to another continent. But I can only speak for myself and tell you my own story. I do think that growing up within a liberal family and a mother that empowered me as a woman has definitely shaped my identity and has influenced the decisions I have made in my life. I don't think this is uniquely German. It is a great privilege that my parents had an attitude of sex positivity and I am glad to say that I was never exposed to a situation where I had to feel shamed of my sexuality."

What changes have you seen impact yourself and other performers during your career?

"Again, I am not the spokesperson for other persons. I can tell you what I have experienced. During my long time as a sex worker I have gained great insight into how this business is similar and/or different from other enterprises that are geared toward making a profit. Porn is, like other economies, also subject to market mechanism. The movies people watch are products meant to generate a profit and performers are workers supplying the producers with (very special) labor services. As I got older I was able to understand the porn business more as a system and less like an isolated situation. Unfortunately porn performers do not enjoy any type of security such as medical insurance, paid vacation, minimum rates, paid sick days, paid maternity/paternity leave and we also do not receive royalties. To a porn performer, it does not make a difference wether the company sells the movie five times or five million times - the one time pay per scene is the same. Now I don't just worry if porn is exploitative to specific individuals regarding race or gender but also how porn as a system exploits its workers."

How do you think that the newer performers are handling the challenges of being a porn star?

"This is an interview with Katja Kassin and I can only tell you about her. I have not talked to enough younger performers to be able to make a statement. But I can tell you that being a porn star or sex worker is a challenging career choice that I was able to handle better in my late 30's than in my early 20's."

How has your performing experience changed now that you are playing MILF roles?

"I personally enjoy acting in Milf scenes more than the scenes I performed when I first got into porn at the age of 23. The Milf (Mother I like to f*ck = women 30+ that is more experienced) roles give me more control over my performance. The turn on for the viewer comes from the portrayal of a strong female individual that takes charge over her sexual experience. The essence of a Milf scenes is more congruent with my personality and my values as a sexual being."

What DVDs would you recommend that a fan of yours should absolutely own?

"As long as they buy a DVD or purchase a membership to any adult site, they made a great choice. I know this sound like a broken record but watching free porn on tubesites hurt your favorite porn performer."

Do you have any favorite performers to work with these days?

"I enjoy to work with performers who value team work and communicate with me before the scene. People who accept my limits and focus on mutual effort to make this a great scene. I want to use this space to shout out to all my trans coworkers and crossover stars I had the pleasure of shooting with. I always enjoyed your professionalism and compassion and I want to show my love to all of you."

Would you share what you have going on with your education?

"Of course. I graduated with my BA in psychology summa cum laude in 2014 and now I am in a masters of social work program. Higher education is a very demanding task, very different from the porn life. I never thought I would get that far because I was told over again that "someone like me" (aka a sex worker) would never succeed in life. I hope that I can use my credentials to disprove that claim and empower more people who are sex workers or shamed because of their sexuality/sexual identity to feel proud and become unapologetic."

Would you change any decision or choice that you have made in your career, looking back on it?

"I would not. The reason for this is that I have a lot of respect for my younger self, the 23 year old German girl that came to the US on her own with 200 dollars in her pocket not even speaking much English. It would be very patronizing of me if I, as a grown woman now, would look back and judge this girl with the privilege of hindsight and wisdom gained from almost 15 years of extra life experience."
