Non-Nude "Playboy" Is Real and It's Here

'Centerfold' Won't Have The Same Meaning Anymore

Honestly, I don’t know how I feel right now. I knew it was going to happen, but I guess part of me thought that maybe, just maybe, Playboy would change their minds and continue having nudes in their magazine, but nope. They have gone non-nude and while sexy, it still feels very odd.

March will be the first non-nude Playboy with the cover going to Instagram and Snapchat star Sarah McDaniel and the centerfold going to Dree Hemingway. Man, it is kind of hard to say “centerfold” and “non-nude” in the same sentence. Playboy released a statement saying the focus is in art, literature, and long-form journalism, but also:

“An entirely contemporary take on photographing the beautiful women who have made the publication one of the most enduring and successful of all time."

I didn’t know contemporary was code word for non-nude. The press release from Playboy Enterprises CEO Scott Flanders went on to say:

“I know I speak for all involved when I say that creating this new Playboy magazine has been a labor of love for those fortunate enough to work on it. We are exceptionally proud of the end result and are confident that everyone will enjoy reading it as much as we did creating it.”

And while some may think this non-nude approach is signaling the end of Playboy since their safe-for-work website launched, they have seen an uptick in page visits. I don’t know.

It’s hard to believe that the days of hiding Playboys between your mattress and boxspring are not only over, but that quickly closing the Playboy webpage is also gone. It might be awhile for some of us old-timers to get used to this. But times change, and you’ve got to change with it. So, tonight, raise a glass to the nude centerfolds of old and the non-nude centerfolds to come.
