Will Our Porn Habits Become Public Knowledge?

EDITORIAL FEATURES

by Coleen Singer at Sssh.com Porn For Women and Couples

As much as I would like to normalize sex and all our sexual kinks and fetishes, I have to admit, I would not like my deepest, darkest sexual secrets to become public knowledge. Somethings are just for my own pleasure—unless I chose to share it with you. My porn habits are very much my own, as are yours. Nearly 70 percent of young men and 20 percent of younger women watch porn every week, and I’m certain no one wants their porn habits exposed. Aside from the breach of privacy, not all porn fantasies reflect who you are as a person. Fantasies are sometimes just that—fantasies.

This might change

In the past few years, we’ve been inundated with a series of privacy hacks that have not only exposed government secrets, but also released photos (hello, the Fappening), information, passwords, names (hey, Ashley Madison!), etc. We never know who the hackers might hack next for whatever reason. According to tech expert Brett Thomas, anyone who has ever viewed porn online—even in incognito mode—might just have their porn habits become public. In an article he posted onto his blog, he makes a compelling case why hackers might one day access and release our x-rated viewing habits! From his article:

“If a malicious party obtained identifiable access logs for just one of the websites that know your name, and view logs for just one of the adult websites you’ve visited, it could infer with very high probability—beyond plausible deniability—a list of porn you’ve viewed,” he explained. “At any time, somebody could post a website that allows you to search anybody by email or Facebook username and view their porn browsing history.”

As if we weren’t already being policed about sex

As it is, we’re already fearful of taking sexts and sending them, thanks to revenge porn sites, SnapChat hacks and the like. Now we’ll need to add another layer of fear to our arsenal of privacy invasions and subsequent shaming. Apparently any determined, enterprising teenager can create havoc. All that is needed is two nominal data breaches and out goes all your private porn habits. And if you think you’re safe because you’ve been switching to Incognito or Private browsing mode, then think again.

“If you are watching/viewing porn online in 2015, even in Incognito mode, you should expect that at some point your porn viewing history will be publicly released and attached to your name,” warns Brett.

Sounds ominous. And rightly so. We shouldn’t have to worry about this kind of shit, and yet here we are. It hasn’t even happened yet but I’m thinking, what can I do? Nothing, apparently. And in the event something like this does happen, the policy that might hastily be enacted in response could also potentially prove to be disastrous for us all. Perhaps the tech community could take a more proactive role in ensuring privacy. Whatever it is, I hope that someone comes up with a solution.
