Salute the Patriotic BBW Masterpiece "Chunky On The Fourth Of July"

SkinTight Pictures' "Chunky On The Fourth of July" was one interesting as fuck BBW production made back in 2003 that skewered some of the media's doings of the day.  Blonde soldier Jessica Lynch had been rescued from Iraqi forces and so was African-American curvy soldier Shoshanna Johnson.  The media paid way more attention to the thin blonde freedom fighter and this BBW porno parodied that media obsession along with the chickenhawk mentality of those who send other people to war, the porn of Max Hardcore and the idea that a woman is not attractive and valuable to society in any way unless she is a size zero.

It starred Roxy Blaze--a curvy performer referred to by now-defunct Hustler Erotic Video Guide as a "hook-nosed heifer" and she ruled as a wounded POW who was double penetrated while in captivity.  "They broke my ass-hymen but they couldn't break me!" Blaze said of her time in captivity in this fine production.

I checked in with the DVD's director Grip Johnson this morning to reflect on this masterwork.

Holly Kingstown: What do you remember most about the making of "Chunky On The Fourth"?

Grip Johnson: I remember the ambition and inspiration that drove Cram and me to develop what would be our passion project, our "Apocalypse Now." It was 2003 and our country was at war. As patriots, Cram and I wanted to do something for the war effort that didn't involve enlisting, giving money, or donating food. On the news, we saw Army Specialist Shoshanna Johnson emerge from Operation Iraqi Freedom as a hero, a chunky, black female prisoner of war with a busted ankle. The media sang her praises... until Private Jessica Lynch stole her thunder with her skinny-blonde, photogenic, media-friendly appeal. Everyone forgot about Shoshana. Meanwhile, Jessica scored book deals and graced magazine covers. We thought that was fucked up. We got to work. We blew our budget on a wheelchair, a helmet, and Blockbuster late fees.

HK: What do you think of the way that BBW porn has changed since this title's release?

GJ: When we were shooting the Chunky series, most BBW productions were shot on a tarp in someone's garage. Nowadays, you can find BBW movies with strong production values and glammed up talent. Sadly, there's rarely any creativity involved. It's by the numbers like most gonzo, and that's fine. Most consumers are only looking to jerk off to a fat girl in colorful lingerie. But, why not exceed expectations? Fetish is such a fun playground because a. it's psychological and b. it's fucking fringe! Anything goes.

We didn't have the budget for mansions, fancy lingerie and reputable male co-stars so we relied heavily on storytelling and satire... and trampolines!

HK: Do you still feel the same way about how thin women are valued more than BBW women by the media?

GJ: BBWs are valued and respected in media - Oprah, Melissa McCarthy, that chick from Wilson Philips, etc. - but not so much as sex symbols. There's always a push of course. People put their best face forward on social media, but it's all a vacuum... especially in porn. Everyone congratulates and encourages each other on the Twitters and Facebooks and it feels like the whole world is right there with you. But, it's not. Weight, race, sexual identity, religion, PC vs. Mac... these are things that will always divide people as a whole. It doesn't matter anyway. If you're an emotionally and mentally sound individual who has grown up thoughtful and self aware, you know everything in the media, be it mainstream or porn, is spin and sparkle and you can enjoy it or ignore it at will because your life is filled with experiences and people that have expanded your thinking and heart.

HK: Any word about what Roxy Blaze is up to these days?

GJ: Last I heard, she took her "Chunky on the Fourth of July" earnings to Central America where she works with blind kids and lepers.

HK: Is there anything you want to say to Fleshbot readers about why they should check out this movie?
