Twenty Questions with Marica Hase

Marica Hase is the first Japanese porn star in recent years to make her way over to America and do a bunch of work in American porn productions. She has been very busy in a lot of productions for Jules Jordan Video, West Coast Productions, Kink and notably Evil Angel. Hase stars in director Aiden Starr's "Lesbian Anal Sex Slaves" for Evil Angel. Hase is one of the most interesting submissives that I have ever seen and the influence of her homeland and its sexuality is most definitely present in her interactions with her American co-stars. 1) What kind of girl were you back in your teen years? What kind of guy did you hang out with/date?

My parents were very strict. My school was also very strict, it was an all girl's school. They said to me, "Teenagers should focus on studying! Don't have a boyfriend." So, there was no easy way for me to hang out with boys when I was a teenager. But sometimes, I would sneak out to go on group dates with my girlfriends and be introduced to boys, even though I was very shy. I pretended to be obnoxious or lesbian by kissing my girlfriends and holding their hands. I didn't know how to talk to boys, so I just wanted to avoid being approached. I have always admired the idea of having a boyfriend. At the same time, I thought hanging out with boys was for bad girls. I didn't have the courage to talk with boys.

2) Were you a fan of American porn before you got into the American porn industry? Who were your favorite American porn stars and/or favorite porn movies?

I wasn't a fan of the American porn industry before I came here. I was not interested in American porn, so I didn't see it at all, but I wanted to challenge myself to enter new fields of porn when I became a top actress in Japan. I thought I would want to try something no native Japanese porn star had tried before, to work in the American Porn industry. I bought an airplane ticket a day after I made that decision. Had I been a fan of the American porn, I wouldn't have had the courage to work in America, especially knowing how difficult it must be to work in an industry that functions so differently from Japan and the language barrier and all. But after I came to America, I became a big fan of American porn stars and the business itself. So, perhaps I was lucky that I didn't know much about the American porn industry.

I had an opportunity to dine with Sean Michaels before I joined the American porn industry. I had never seen his work, but when I met him, I felt that his aura was different from that of any porn stars. He is like the God of porn.

3) What do you enjoy most about being dominated as you are in “Lesbian Anal Sex Slaves”?

I felt very secure being dominated during that project because of the people involved. So, I was able to relax and enjoy the scene. Skin Diamond and Aiden Starr were very professional. And, they also have a career in submission; they know how to be considerate of a woman’s body based on their experience.

4) What or who do you want to do on-camera that you haven’t done yet?

I want to improve my English language skills so that I can play in scenes with more dialogue. I can be a slave very comfortably. But with more language skills, I will be able to take on the challenge of dominating someone. That will be exciting!

5) Who is your favorite male performer and female performer to work with and why?

I have a great respect for all the Spiegler girls. In addition to being the top porn stars, they are also a group of great career women who direct, volunteer for good causes, publish their own books, etc. That is a bit different from the Japanese porn stars.

My favorite male performers are: Prince Yahshua, John Strong, Manuel Ferrara. They approach sex in a very Western, dynamic, passionate style, but still have the delicate sensibilities like the Japanese male performers.

6) You seem to really love your Twitter fans. How are your American and Japanese fans the same and how are they different?

All my fans are very kind to me. I love both America and Japanese fans, but they are very different. American fans support and respect us as porn actresses. Almost of all American fans like to watch us have sex, so we appeal to them in a very sexy ways on Twitter. The sexier our videos are, the more popularity we gain. On the other hand, the Japanese fans like to think of us as their fantasy, perfect girlfriends who don’t have any other boyfriends, never are bitchy, or smoke cigarettes. So we tend to play up to their expectations when we are tweeting for the Japanese fans.

7) What’s your favorite position to get fucked in and why does it get you off?

Missionary position while being choked. Choking make me super sensitive, so I feel more intimate and sexy, and also I enjoy seeing the face of men who are having orgasms.

8) What is the thing that is the most different about performing in Japanese porn productions versus American ones?

The ideal porn actress for Japanese men is fragile, sweet, and helpless. On the other hand, men in America and Europe look for strength, sexiness, and aggressiveness in a woman. These differences have a great impact on how I behave as a porn actress, from the gestures I use in the porno shoot to the type of selfies I would upload for promotional purposes. The Japanese ladies always prioritize a man's pleasure first. This does not mean they aren’t enjoying themselves. They feel even better about being the kind of woman who prioritizes man’s pleasure… I guess that’s a cultural thing. I was born and raised in Japan, and such attitude came natural to me. One of the biggest challenges for me as an international star was to make the necessary adjustments so that my play will be appropriate for the international audience.

9) Why do you think more Japanese female performers have not come over to the United States to work?

As an “island country”, Japan is separated from the rest of the world by the ocean so they do everything their own way without the influence of the rest of the world. This applies not only to porn, but to many aspects of life – a typical Japanese person is not always comfortable living or working in America.

There are so many obstacles for Japanese porn actresses to come and work in America such as the language barrier, obtaining a working visa, etc. In addition, the Japanese adult superstars are paid ten times more than that of the American porn stars. Considering those factors, you would need to have a special dream that is worthy of giving up the comfortable environment and the big pay in Japan.

In addition, there is the mosaic issue. They are required by law to cover up the pussy with mosaics in Japan. Once a Japanese actress appears on a video outside of Japan and reveals her pussy, she loses her freshness in the eyes of the Japanese fans, then, there goes her popularity. So it is extremely difficult for Japanese actresses to return to the Japanese porn industry once they exposes their pussies overseas.

10) What are the best things about being a porn star?

I think being a porn star is pretty much like being an actress. We commit to being the character who is different from who we are. I really enjoy creating different moods that suits each situations from being passionate, brave, glamorous, or gorgeous.

11) What did you like most about working for Aiden Starr?

She is one of the best directors for domination. I really love working for Aiden. Some directors only think about shocking the viewers or what kind of pain to bring on the performers, and simply force their ideas on the set, because they have never been dominated by someone. But, Aiden knows everything. She makes movies from her own experiences. I can submit to her without any worries.

12) What do you think is your best scene overall?

Manuel Ferrara Productions/Evil Angel's "Raw 11". This was the first video I did in America shot by Manuel Ferrara. The whole video is shot POV-style, starting with a date in Hollywood, shopping, lunch, then going to the hotel at the end. I’d never been in a shoot in America before, and I was so nervous. Manuel took me out for dinner a night before to help me relax so that I could enjoy the date in the shoot next day. He told me, “Marica doesn’t understand English. Marica is VERY Japanese. What we want to shoot is Marica being just the way you are, wearing your own make up and clothes. Use a dictionary if you want. When I came from France long time ago, I couldn’t speak English either, so I know how you feel. I just want you to continue enjoying our date just the way you are right now”. I have enjoyed being in many different projects since then from super hardcore to beautiful ones, but I think I enjoyed that project the most for letting me be just the way I was.

13) Who are your role models in porn and how/why do they inspire you?

I respect all porn stars, but I don't have a specific role model. Perhaps that is why I was able to be the first native Japanese porn star in America.

14) How was Skin Diamond to work with?

I admire Skin so much, it was an honor to work with her. Unlike any Japanese women, she is strong, stylish, and has a star personality and the aura. After I worked with her, I learned she is also feminine and sweet. She dominates in a sensual, beautiful way.

15) What is the best mainstream movie you have seen recently?

Sex and the City, LOL! Both the TV series and the movies were very popular in Japan. I think all the girls in Japan went to the movie theater to see it. It was exciting to see women who have careers and enjoy high fashion and love life. I thought America was cosmopolitan like that everywhere… so it was a little shocking to move to sunny, relaxing California… what a huge place… can’t go anywhere without a car!!

16) How about the best porno movie? Is there someone whose movies you like to watch who is working now?

I can't choose just one. I love all porno movies. I have to say, Prince Yahshua was shocking. He has so much passion! I have never met anyone like him before in Japan.

17) Are you into toys to get yourself off alone or are you a low-tech woman?

If I had to choose… a HITACHI! But I don't like doing it by myself. I get turned on when a guy watches me or tells me what to do to get me off!

18) If you could fuck any American celebrity, who would it be? Give us your male and female choices. How about your Japanese choices?

I can’t think of anyone. Outside of work, I’m pretty traditional and old fashioned, so my fantasies don’t include much eroticism. To be frank, I would like to rest my “equipment” when I don't have a shoot.

19) What is coming up for you?

I have always thought of winning an AVN fan award as an important step in this process. Please vote for me ;)

20) Is there anything you want to say to your fans here at Fleshbot?

I am the first native Japanese porn star to work internationally. It is still not easy for a Japanese woman to be accepted in this industry, but I will continue to work very hard to explore my possibilities and reach my dreams. I hope such efforts of mine will also inspire my fans in some way.
