Virus “Deactivation” Condoms To Go On Sale Down Under

The Australians are officially the first to get serious about AIDS prevention by improving existing products. In this particular case, they've created a condom with virus killing properties that was just approved for sale by Australian regulators. 

According to The Telegraph (link below)...

The prophylactics, which are expected to be released in a couple of months, use an antiviral nanotech compound called VivaGel to deactivate a range of STDs including HIV, herpes and human papilloma virus

Dr Jackie Fairley, the chief executive of the company which created VivaGel, said: “Condoms are not 100 per cent effective in preventing either pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections and so anything that you can do to reduce the number of virus particles by inactivating them with a substance like VivaGel would reduce overall viral load."

Viral load, eh? I think these guys need to check their terminology before dishing out quotes. Still, this is the first serious step forward in combating STDs as opposed to just trying futilely to prevent them.
