Porn Stars Discuss "Coming Out" as Porn Stars

With close to 115,000 individuals listed on the Internet Adult Film Database as adult film stars, there has got to be a moment for each and every one of them where they've had to "come out" to their friends and family as porn stars.

Vox (see link below) is spotlighting a handful of these individuals in a new piece that documents the moment when they announced to the people closest to them that they were making a living having sex. They interview some big time stars like Joanna Angel, Stoya, Lisa Daniels, and Jessica Drake (who just did an exclusive interview with Fleshbot).

It's worth your time to read the whole article, but here are some of the choicest excerpts from these ladies.

Joanna Angel: "I had never wanted to be private... When I do something, I'm proud of it. Joanna is my real name, and I told my parents before it was going to be released because I thought they should hear it from me and not from someone else."

Stoya: "I tip-toed into it... Because of the process, it was less jarring than suddenly announcing, 'Hey, guess what I'm doing for a living now! In the butt!'"

Lisa Daniels: "I did lose friends because of the industry. It turned out that their boyfriends were watching me in my movies and the girls no longer wanted me to come around... the other performers that I have formed a friendship with, we tend to have a really strong bond. We understand each other, we go through the same things."

Jessica Drake: "I wasn't close to my mother at all, and she took it upon herself to tell my father in the worst way imaginable: she sent him pictures of me having sex. When I managed to talk to him about it, he didn't want to discuss the particulars of my job for obvious reasons (and neither did I), but he told me as long as I was happy and being safe, he loved me and supported me."
