As we recently learned from Porn MD’s interactive porn term analyzer, the most searched-for term in America is “MILF.” That fills us with a great sense of pride! Why? Because MILFs are magical, and today we’re going to spend some time meditating on the term.
Rise of the MILF
As we all know, MILF is an acronym for Mother I’d Like to Fuck. It’s widely assumed that the term was coined in “American Pie” when two teens at a houseparty found a picture of Stifler’s mom (played by Jennifer Coolidge) and declared her a MILF before making out with the pic. The truth is that “American Pie” only popularized the term, but it had been around for a time before that. The first documented usage of the acronym can be found in an internet newsgroup from 1995 that discusses a Playboy pictorial showcasing hot moms.
Even though the term is relatively new, the MILF archetype can be found throughout history. Mrs. Robinson in “The Graduate” is one of the best-known MILFs of American cinema, and inspired countless fantasies about taking off Anne Bancroft’s stockings. The titular character of “Tom Jones” has a MILF of his own, Lady Bellaston, who controls Tom with sex, spite, and showers of gifts. To some extent, every mythical instance of a mortal mating with a goddess could be considered a form of MILF lust.
So what makes MILFs the most desired figures in porn today? We’d like to say it has something to do with people needing a wise, experienced, security-giving lover in these times of severe economic turmoil, but we can’t be sure. The most solid guess we can give is that baby boomers–who run the country due to the sheer size of their demographic–are looking for hot honeys closer to their age. It’s only a theory!

MILF Vs. Cougar
The porn industry tends to use MILF and cougar interchangeably, but even if you think it’s fair to let the two terms be synonyms, there are definitely some connotations that keep them apart. Here’s how we compare and contrast the two.
Both MILFs and cougars…
· Are older women, at least from the standpoint of the person applying the label.
· Have big, heaving bosoms. Can have breasts of any size (as India Summer demonstrates), although the majority of performers in these categories tend to be busty.
· Demonstrate confidence, experience, and often control in sexual situations.
MILFs…
· Are (allegedly) mothers, or are found in situations and environments that suggest a settled domestic life with a husband and/or children.
· Are objects of desire, not objectifiers. This may be too literal an interpretation of the acronym, but we support it.
· Are MILFs no matter who is having sex with them.
Cougars…
· Are on the prowl for younger men and tend to be the aggressors in their relationships.
· Flaunt their sexuality in dress and manners.
· Are cougars only when taking younger lovers.
Of course, feel free to argue against any of these points. It’s not easy to discern MILF from cougar, and we expect to be wrong!

Teen MILFs: Paradox or Prophecy?
In the past, we’ve talked about how the porn industry fetishizes age yet has no labels for women who are between the “teen” and “MILF” demographics. That’s still something we find problematic, but we’re even more confused by the “Event Horizon”-like quantum folding of titles that gives the world teen MILFs. What could have given rise to such a character?
One theory is that teen MILFs give consumers the best of both worlds. The archetypal teen in pornography is someone who appears innocent and naive but has a voracious sexual appetite. The MILF portion of “teen MILF” is in some sense an explanation for the young woman’s developed eroticism and confidence. From a shallower standpoint, it’s a way to have MILF-level nastiness and scenarios without the age, a cop out for those who don’t want to watch mature bodies in motion.
Still, we don’t understand what the function of teen MILFs are in terms of age fetishization. The youth is apparent and present at all times, but the maturity is only brought up for the sake of a label. Some films actually do toy with the teenage mother angle–such as “She’s Barely a MILF,” in which Faye Reagan bemoans her recent pregnancy and then gets banged by Dane Cross–but without the dressings of busty age and womanly wisdom, it’s hard to say what the appeal is for MILF-lovers. After all, when you’re watching porn for the sake of seeing a mother mid-coitus, you are taking all of society’s concepts behind motherhood into consideration, including what you know about your mother.
