The story's main focus is the friendship between Dree and the 85 year-old Besedka Johnson (a first-time actor), and the secrets that bring them together. The movie deals with the cliche of a young actor moving to Los Angeles, floating around, and ending up in porn, but since director Sean Baker went though a version of that in his own life, "Starlet" delivers a fresh perspective on a familiar plot. Some are calling this movie an intergenerational buddy chick flick, others call it "Harold and Maude" meets "Boogie Nights," so you can get an idea of the mix of dark humor and raw human empathy at work here.
And speaking of raw humans, we'd like to point out that this movie also stars Asa Akira, Kristina Rose, Lily LaBeau, Kaci Starr, Tracey Sweet, Jessi Palmer, Cassandra Nix and Chastity Lynn. Does a greater quantity of pornstars make for a better quality film? Yes, obviously, but we've seen them do their respective things before. What we're really jonesing for is the rest of this hardcore Dree/Manuel tryst. We guess we'll just have to wait until November 9th when it hits theaters. Sigh.
Sean Baker has done some uniquely fascinating stuff in his day (see: the filthy puppets on "Greg the Bunny" and the charming criminals in "Prince of Broadway"), but we think this may be his best work yet, and we dearly hope that it inspires other mainstream media types to pair up hot actresses with Manuel Ferrara.
That's, like, what we pray for on the regular.
