Will The iPad Change The Way We Consume Porn?

Will The iPad Change The Way We Consume Porn?Internet-enabled computers managed to transform the way we consume porn—as did smartphones like the iPhone a few years later. Now, with the iPad, Apple’s released a whole new class of device: how will it effect adult entertainment?

Well, if you ask us, it probably won’t—or at least, not in the way its predecessors did. While there’s no doubt that the iPad is a hugely transformative device that will shape the way we consume a great deal of media, when it comes to porn…well, it just doesn’t quite cut it.

As we see it, there are two main problems with the device:

Content: The iPad is set up to download media from three sources: the app store, the iTunes store, and the iBooks store. Awesome, sure—unless you like porn. As Apple has shown, time and time again, they’re just not to keen on letting adult entertainment into their universe. And since there’s no DVD drive on this baby, you can forget about watching porn that way. If you want to consume anything dirty, you have two options:

1) Go to a porn website using Safari (and forget about sites using Flash-based streaming video).

2) Load a dirty movie into iTunes (that you got from some place other than the iTunes store), and load it on to your iPad that way.

Not the worst options, of course—after all, those are the same ways one gets porn onto the iPhone. But that brings us to the second issue.

It’s not discreet: The iPad has—rightly—been described as a very big iPhone…and that’s exactly the problem. The main reason why the iPhone has had such a successful career in porn is because it’s tiny. As a small, portable device, the iPhone allows you to browse porn discreetly, wherever you may be: at home, at the office, out on the town…and do we really have to explain the benefits of being able to comfortably hold it with one hand?

The iPad, on the other hand, though more manageable than a laptop, is hardly a discreet device. No one’s going to believe you’re bringing it to the bathroom “to do some reading”—and can you imagine the strain you’ll get from holding it in one hand as you lie in bed? And don’t even get us started on what would happen if you tried to browse porn on it in public…

Steve Jobs described the iPad as a device that fills the gap between computers and smartphones. And it’s true. But in occupying that central position, the iPad’s a device that’s neither here nor there. Too limited in content to be a portable porn library, and too big and bulky for secret porn watching, it’s pretty much the worst of both worlds…at least for the porn connoisseurs of the world.

I assume it is impervious to water based lubricants?

Go to a porn website using Safari (and forget about sites using Flash-based streaming video).

Fortunately, most decent flash based sites (PornHub, etc.) have iPhone-compatible mobile sites that work fairly well. They should be accessible through the iPad.

Yeah, not ideal, but it gets the job done in a squeeze.

I think you pretty much have no privacy with one of these devices. Case in point: I was on a flight last week watching a special on Comedy Central on my iPhone that I’d pulled from the TiVo. Half of the ads were for Girls Gone Wild, and as I was fast-forwarding through them, the flight attendant came by and shot me a look. I felt totally busted, because really, who wants to be that guy on the plane?

The iPad is going to be even worse for that due to the size. Crucially, the display doesn’t face you the same way it does with a laptop, and the viewing angles are such that you are not safe from prying eyes or even inadverant glances. So it’s out from a privacy standpoint.

Of course, if you have it at home in its dock where its wide viewing angles allow it to be a nice visual aid for you and maybe others, then all those negatives become positives.

I feel the same way about the iPad. It attempts to get on top and straddle an imagined gaping divide that doesn’t seem to provide much support. It’s not powerful or loose enough to accept multiple media formats, and is too prudish with the formats and inputs it does provide.

A ballsy smart phone or well-endowed netbook fill these tasty niches for less money, and provide more versatility, more portability, and most importantly, more pornability.

Oh yeah. Just great, Apple. Look at what you’ve done now. I can just imagine sitting in a corner of the bus with my 10in LED back lit, jailbroken iPad watching amateur videos from an iSteamy app that I downloaded from Cydia. How great would it be to watch in on that screen.

This device is essentially a hybrid of three pre-existing products: smart-phone, laptop, and e-reader tablet. The way we consume adult media on those three devices has been more or less pre-defined by the limitations of each of those devices.

So if it can’t do anything more than the iPhone, Kindle, and a laptop can do, then it’s really not a game-changer. And considering Apple’s anti-porn stance, it’s even less likely to be a game-changer from an access-to-content perspective.

But here’s a question for those of you who attended AEE (Lux?) – Did you see anything there that could be seen as a potential game-changer? 3-D? Virtual? Smartphones?

No, nothing will replace a computer with 2 open browsers with 10 tabs consuming huge amounts while feveriously clicking away for 2 hours.

    porn “on the go”, yes.

Might not change it, but it will def make it look bigger.

Who is this Stoya and does she have a newsletter?

Yeah.. you might want to choose which hand you prefer and stick to it. You think the iPhone shows finger prints now.. ;)

That picture of Stoya was my background about two days ago.

This is silly. The iPad is not going to change anything.

  • KupoCheer

Screen viewing angles are too good (supposedly). That’s a big negative on the porn front.

well of course is is handy for browsing porn on the couch, in bed, wherever.. it’s as personal, portable and private as a smartphone, but with a bigger screen.

nice and easy to hit up one of the many mobile optimised sites.. that our company is building for leading studios – no need for App Store or jailbreak.. come to Spankmo !
