New! Different! Fleshbot!

Loyal readers of Fleshbot! You may have noticed that we just got a makeover. There’ve been a few changes to how things work—and here’s an overview of what to expect.

Image and video embedding in comments: Comments now have an option to upload images and easily embed YouTube videos. So now you can finally show us your favorite picture of your favorite Crush Object…in the comments!

Comment order: Up until now, comments have been in chronological order. We’re switching them to reverse chronological order—like Facebook or Twitter. There’s one exception to this, however. Replies to a comment will still appear in a thread below the comment…in regular chronological order (again, this is like Facebook).

Comment editing: After you post a comment, you’ll have a fifteen minute window in which to edit your comment. Finally, freedom from all those embarrassing typos!

Star commenters, now with more awesome: Those little yellow stars aren’t just for show anymore. If you’re a starred commenter, you’ll be able to see comments that haven’t been approved (they’ll have a different colored background, so you know they’re not live). See something good? You have the ability to approve it! But be warned…if you abuse the power, and approve comments better left in purgatory, you risk losing your star.

Related stories: Reading a story, and find you’re dying to know more about the topic at hand? The right column now displays related stories, for easy access to related coverage.

EDIT: Oh, also—if you’re ever overwhelmed by the sheer number of comments, you can always opt to see just comments by star commenters (aka “featured comments”). By default, you’ll see all comments, though (as opposed to sites like Gawker and Jezebel, which default to featured comments).

And as with any change, things may be a little buggy for a time. Notice any problems? Don’t hesitate to email us with a report.

Not to be the bearer of bad news (but…), the image for this entry isn’t appearing. The new features sound awesome, tho’.

Oh my goodness, I’m so pleased to see my little panda image in an actual posting. Although that comment next to it seems snide when taken out of context (it’s a lyric to one of the Dresden Dolls songs).

So strange, though, to minimize seven pages of comments on that “Name A Porn Star” thread and only see Lux and The Professor. Kinda awesome too, though.

It’s going to take a little getting used to, but I think I’m going to like this.

My first edit(yay): boo for names getting cut off so much, though.

‘m glad you defaulted to all comments versus only featured comments on Fleshbot. Our comment section isn’t quite what the sibling’s are, so it is nice to show all.

I also appreciate that in your write up you mention that we can lose stars. It seems like the other sites are hiding that little secret :P

Overall, whatever it takes to make my fleshbot more awesome, I support 100%.

    Am I a starred commentator??

Mostly this system just crashes IE8. I know I should use Firefox, but I use that for all my porn. Fleshbot is news.

It’s gonna take some gettin’ used to. I thought you guys got rid of the comments at first.

At first when I saw the new format, I was really scared (I’m easily frightened by change :-[ ). But after reading through the above write-up, I am totally digging this setup!

The editing feature is a huge plus. I can’t tell you how long I’ve been hoping for that to be implemented. And the new reverse chronological order is brilliant as well.

I am also greatly appreciative that our little stars are no longer simply decorative. The approval vs. demotion feature is ingenious, though I do need a bit of clarification on the system. For example, if a comment has yet to be approved by a starred poster, does this mean that that particular unapproved comment is invisible to non-starred users? What, exactly, happens to a comment that has been approved, or on the other hand, demoted? Is it banished to technology hell, to rot alongside Real Media Player, and that incredibly annoying Paperclip assistant from Office 2000? Or does the number of “demotions” a user receives count against against their status on the site?

Finally, Lux, will you post some further guidelines, or send out some personal warning messages if Starred commenters inadvertently end up using the new functions in some unapproved manner? It would kind of suck if a person were to be stripped and demoted on the spot, without warning, whilst unaware that they had used the new features inappropriately.

Thanks for the new format, though! It really shows that a lot of work went into it.
