Tsang Kinwah: High Art And Secret Porn

At first glance, Tsang Kinwah’s painting looks like just a greyish rectangle–perhaps a colorblind Mondrian, or some other sort of high art. But if you look closely, and maybe squint a little (okay, a lot), you’ll start to see a bit of detail, a bit of definition, a bit of, uh, hardcore oral action. Yes, not only is this high art–it’s also secret hardcore porn. There is probably some deep statement at work here… but we’re just wondering if it’s possible to use this technology to create some truly safe-for-work porn. Anyone have any ideas?

Tsang hand-makes these pieces on canvas w/ white emulsion paint, so this method is pretty painstaking to mass reproduce porn images into “SFW” media. It would be interesting, however, to see if the geniuses over at Adobe can develop some sort of white-out filter or tool to replicate this process digitally.

That said, I appreciate Tsang and I can see that his overall work is very confrontational (and controversial). He’s built his career on it. In addition to the white-out porn, Tsang makes these lovely floral patterns like you’d see on Chinese silk gowns. But every one of those flower patterns is constructed with filthy words (in different languages even).

When one loads up Fleshbot we see the words “Pure Filth” and of course its NSFW. Tsang artfully disguises “filth” – is it to make sexuality palatable as high art, or is it to expose the hypocrisy of our society’s censorship of sexuality? This begs the question – why would we even want Adobe to make a white-out filter to make our porn “SFW”?

It’s not surprising Tsang is an ex-Christian.
