2008_06_11_usenet.jpgThe Attorney General of New York admirably wants to put a stop to child porn online. His less-than-admirable solution? Order ISPs to effectively turn off all 100,000+ Usenet discussion groups, even though only a small handful of them ever engage in any illegal activity. Why not nuke the entire internet while you’re at it? It’s the only way to really be sure. (cnet.com, via Valleywag)

It’s ironic, the ISP’s have known they carry the kiddy porn newsgroups for decades but never stopped carrying them. Instead of just not subscribing their server to the offending groups, they see it as a chance to save money on bandwidth by just cutting it off with this as an excuse. Most people don’t know how to use newsgroups and the spamming on the binary groups has gotten so out of control I can’t imagine how much space they must use for a commercial server. The attorney general sounds like one of the adults on South Park with this kind of fix. The ISP’s doing it don’t think they’ll lose many customers, and will save more money by not paying for the feed bandwidth, servers, and admins. If they wanted to actually stop kid porn they would have unsubscribed from this feeds long ago, but they never did. With safe harbor in the DMCA they could host all that kid porn on the Usenet and nothing could happen to them since it was added in there they weren’t responsible for anything illegal.
